Daily Financial / December 5, 2019

In the case of shops that are located in shopping centers, sales fell 9% in the penultimate month of the year, from a sample of 1,900 local.

According to preliminary figures submitted by the Santiago Chamber of Commerce (CCS) and FollowUP, the retail sales of apparel and footwear have become to fall in November, but with less violence than in October and presenting signs of improvement in the margin. In the case of shops that are located in shopping centers, sales fell 9% in the penultimate month of the year, from a sample of 1,900 local. In the various categories of clothing, in the meantime, the sales decreased 13% in the same period.

The category beaten within apparel, footwear and accessories continues to be the bags, backpacks and portfolios, which showed a contraction of 34% in November. He continues to dress youth, with a 25%, costume of a man and a woman, with 24 and 21 percent, respectively, and sportswear, with a 18%.

At the other extreme, the sale of clothing outlets managed to rebound, an increase of 10% in November, probably related to the change of habit revealed by the consumers, in terms of give priority to products of lower cost given the level of uncertainty. The other item that succeeded in blue numbers was a child, with an increase of 4%. In both cases, the proximity to Christmas may have influenced their performance of the month.

The result of November was critically marked by the good results of the weekend of November 16 and 17, post-political agreement for peace and a new constitution, which allowed to decrease transiently levels of uncertainty.

In October, in the meantime, while the effect of social explosion was present only in a part of the month, the violence of the fall in the first week marked dramatically the results of the period (with declines of 75% in clothing and footwear).

In the last week of November, in the meantime, the sector managed to post a modest growth of 1% in costume and 4% in non-costume, despite the fact that in semi-durables only 3 categories reached the waterline: Child, outdoor and outlet.

At the level of geographical areas, Santiago Center continues to be by far the area hardest hit, racking up a further drop in November, this time from 32% in comparison with the same month of the previous year. The situation in the call ground zero remains critical for the retail trade, and threatening the viability of large number of small local and stability of the jobs generated. The south zone of the Metropolitan Region, in both, had a fall of 8%, the east 7% and the north of 4%. In the North of the territory, in the meantime, the sales had a worrying decline of 8%, much higher than the -2% which yielded the Southern area.

For the next few weeks we expect new moderaciones in the rhythms of contraction,
provided that they do not take up intensity acts of violence and vandalism that have been affected with hardness in the sector.
